Stay Safe, Know the Signs, Stop Online Fraud

According to a new survey by UK Finance’s Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign, almost 40% of people looking for love online have been asked for money. A whopping 57% of those asked for money said they did actually give or lend it.

This campaign and the Online Dating Association (ODA) are advising people on how to stay safe online, especially around Valentine’s day! This includes issuing tips on how to spot fake dating profiles and keep your money safe online.

As members of the ODA, we also conducted research at the end of January, sending a survey to members across our Platforms, aiming to gain greater insight into behaviour within our online communities, and further improve online safety and awareness.

The results of our survey suggest that, generally, members feel confident and safe enough to date in person around Valentine’s day, but are still relying heavily on online dating apps and sites to find the person to date. This is particularly true for female members - with ¾ of female respondents saying that they’d be using online dating to find a date, in comparison to just over ½ of male respondents.

A reassuring majority of respondents show high levels of online safety awareness - with 81% saying they wouldn’t send money to someone they’d only ever met online. However, there’s still plenty of room for improvement with a substantial 19% of users still willing to send money in these circumstances! More alarmingly, 39% of all female respondents said that they would send money to someone they’d only met online, in comparison to only 17% of all males.

According to the ODA, the 3 most common reasons people have been asked for money online are:

  1. The person claimed they need the money for an “emergency” (37%);
  2. To cover “transport costs” of the person to visit them from overseas (36%);
  3. To help the person make an “investment” (29%).

We regularly provide our members with fresh content on how to protect themselves online and avoid becoming the next victim of a scammer, with 77% of survey respondents being aware of site content such as blogs and articles surrounding online safety. We'll be ramping up our efforts to target all members with helpful safety tips across our Platforms even more throughout the year!
