I'm looking for a woman who knows that life really is pretty simple...a woman who is good to her friends, who helps the old lady next door bring her groceries in, who leaves a generous tip for the waitress who brings her breakfast to the counter. I'm looking for a woman who knows that even the simple minded, the hungry and the dirty have some value, that sometimes you can learn more from a woman who has been stripped of everything except her dignity than you can from a woman who knows the right wine to order with dinner. I'm looking for a woman who can lie in bed with me on Sunday mornings and read the New York Times and not mind if I fall back asleep and roll over on the section of the paper she was going to read next. I'm a simple person in terms of expectations, I want to treat myself and others with some modicum of dignity, I want you to treat me the same way, I want you to be able to laugh at my ignorance when it surfaces, I want you to treat me with the same grace with which I strive to treat you, I want you to look for what's right with and about me, and when you walk into a crowded room, I want you to seek my face first.
I want you to set a right example for me, and I want you to hold me to the same standard.
I grew up in the Appalachian coal fields, my father never graduated from high school and my mother never finished the sixth grade and yet they were my greatest teachers when it came to being responsible, to working hard, to paying my taxes and my own way, to sharing my time and energy with my neighbors. I like a woman who speaks respectfully of her parents.
