When John Freeman approached Barry about contributing to the "Power" issue of Freeman's, Barry told him that he couldn't think of an approach that depended on conventional understandings of the word power, as in "political power," "to be in power," etc., but would like to think about some unconventional way to come at this. His response was a piece called "14 Aspects of Power," an autobiographical reflection on various encounters—with a black mamba in Kenya, with police in Michigan who charged him with a capital crime, with banshee winds while he was camped on the polar plateau near the South Pole, with a gas chamber at Auschwitz, a TSA agent at Amarillo, Texas, and with others.
