For me writing, especially fiction is like opening a window to a world and then trying to type in as much of the most essential as I can before it all goes away. I've written for 3 days solid without sleep and aside from bathroom and beverage breaks not left the computer. 24 and 48 hour writing sessions are common for me and I can rip out a first draft in a week or two sometimes.
Writing is a very personal effort and how we each keep track of characters, events and such has led to many very different systems. Some writers plaster their walls with notes while they write. Me I use up screen real estate on my machine. If I had to use Windows I could never do what I do writing wise without resorting to stick it notes all over the walls.
