Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1945. My parents ran a florist shop in downtown Honolulu, where myself and my 2 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters spent many a night helping out. Graduated from Iolani School in 1963 where I lettered in football, wrestling and rowing. I attended the University of Hawaii where I found my passion in the botanical sciences graduating with a BA in 1968. I continued at the University of California at Berkeley earning my Master's in 1972 and my PhD in 1974 in Plant Pathology with a minor in Microbiology. In 1974, I accepted a position at the University of Hawaii in the Department of Plant Pathology where I spent my professional career first as a Research Associate, then Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor until my recent retirement in 2008.
